~ Learn to better navigate altered or psychedelic states~ Lessen the impact of stress on your mind and body ~ Reduce “compassion fatigue” if you are a care giver~ Increase heart rate variability ~ Build your resilience and energy reserves ~ Respond to charged situations with composure & clear coherent communication ~ Learn to set appropriate compassionate boundaries ~
This work is for anyone who wants to feel more calm and in control of their lives. It is a gentle way to regulate a traumatized system so can be a wonderful adjunct to traditional talk therapy or a good starting point for people who want to do self work but feel overwhelmed or scared of beginning the process. It is a fabulous practice for people interested in psychedelic explorations or altered states as it can keep the system calm and regulated in what can often be a very intense experience. I have found it to be endlessly helpful in keeping me calm and present during my own psychedelic journeys.
This work is all about bringing our systems into a state of coherence. Our heart generates a large electromagnetic field that is responsible for regulating the rest of our bodily systems. When the heart rate is regular and flexible it signals our nervous system that we are safe. When our nervous system thinks we are safe positive neurotransmitters are released that facilitate “higher” thinking and decision making takes place in the prefrontal cortex. When we are not activated in the fight/flight/freeze mode our brain, heart & nervous system have clear pathways of communication and can function symbiotically. This is called a state of coherence, all systems functioning smoothly and in harmony. Incidentally the hearts electromagnetic field also interacts with other peoples, other living beings and the planets so when we are in a coherent state we have a positive impact on those around us. The more time we spend in a state of coherence the more it becomes second nature and our new base state of being. The positive effects of these techniques can be felt immediately but it does take some dedication to regular practice and the support of a coach can help in making lasting changes.
In our current world most of us live in an almost constant state of fight/flight/freeze. It might not seem that way at first glance but that is because our bodies quickly become desensitized to stress hormones and we need more and more of them to feel the stress consciously. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. The oppressive over stimulation of sound & information and exposure to back-lit screens keeps our reptilian brain in a heightened state of alertness. Our internal organs are bathed constantly in cortisol & adrenaline. This is before taking into account the very real fear and anxiety many people live in due to the current political status of our country or money worries or health concerns etc….Countless scientific method studies have been published that show a correlation between disease states and regular exposure to stress hormones. Living from this place of being has a tremendously negative impact on all levels of our health.
Through many years of scientific research into the nature of the heart & nervous system, the heart math institute has developed a unique set of heart focused mindfulness techniques coupled with biofeedback technology that can drastically change how our minds and bodies respond to such an environment. When we consciously shift to appreciation, compassion or another positive, loving emotion, our heart rhythms immediately shift. This electrical shift in the heart creates a favorable cascade of neural, hormonal and biochemical events that benefit the entire body. Blood pressure drops. Stress hormones plummet. The immune system pumps up. Antiaging hormones increase. We gain clarity, calmness, control. And effects are both immediate and long lasting. From this place we can handle intense and difficult situations without falling into the classic stress response cycle that releases massive amounts of cortisol and adrenaline into our systems and self perpetuates, wearing us down psychologically & emotionally. These practices have also been shown to increase heart rate variability which directly benefits the immune system, the cardiovascular system and inflammation response. People with a high HRV (heart rate variability) are at significantly lower risk for heart attacks, high blood pressure, chronic inflammatory disorders, autoimmune disorders & psychological issues like depression & anxiety.
